Call for Case Studies: Urban Housing Climate Resilience in the Arab Region

We are inviting submissions of innovative case studies for inclusion in an upcoming Issue Brief on Urban Housing and Climate Resilience in the Arab Region. This publication will spotlight practical, locally grounded housing solutions that respond to climate risks and aim to inform policy, research, and practice across the region.

🌍 Why This Matters

Communities across the Arab region are increasingly experiencing the impacts of climate change, including extreme heat, flash floods, drought, and dust storms. In this context, housing must evolve, not only to withstand environmental shocks, but also to protect vulnerable populations and support long-term resilience.

This Issue Brief will feature real-world examples of housing interventions that strengthen climate resilience in urban settings, especially in low-income and informal contexts.

In addition to being included in the publication, selected initiatives may be highlighted in future UHPH convenings and communications, including regional events, webinars, or learning exchanges. Contributors will also benefit from increased visibility among regional and international stakeholders, and may be considered for future opportunities for collaboration and peer learning.

🌍 Eligibility

Submissions are welcome from the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

We welcome submissions from a diverse range of stakeholders, including local and international NGOs, academic and research institutions, grassroots initiatives, community-based organizations, social enterprises, and municipal or local government actors. Whether well-established or newly formed, large or small in scale, we encourage initiatives that demonstrate strong local relevance, innovation, and a commitment to climate-resilient urban development to apply.

📌Selection Criteria:

  • Relevance: Initiatives involving retrofitting, structural housing improvements, design or material innovations, or housing adaptations aiming to enhance resilience to extreme heat, flooding and flash floods, urban drought, dust storms, cyclones, or sea level rise.
  • Affordability: Initiatives that demonstrate affordability, cost-effectiveness, targeting of low-income and/or vulnerable populations, or scalability in resource-constrained contexts.
  • Innovation and Creativity: Initiatives utilizing innovative approaches—whether through the use of alternative materials, new technologies, creative design strategies, or inclusive community engagement—are strongly encouraged.
  • Participation: Initiatives that actively engage communities, especially marginalized or vulnerable groups, in the planning, design, implementation, or maintenance of housing resilience measures, and that promote local ownership, capacity building, and inclusive decision-making are strongly encouraged.
